How to Replace a Faucet Without Replacing the Valve
There are many factors to consider when selecting a new faucet. The number of handles, spray nozzle type and even the spacing of required holes are all important considerations.
Before replacing a faucet it is important to shut off the water supply. This will prevent water from spraying all over your bathroom while you work on the replacement.
Turn off the water
If you need to replace a faucet, it’s important to turn off the water supply. If you don’t, you will waste a lot of water and you might even flood your space. In most cases, you can shut off the water at the main valve on your water meter. This is usually outside your house, in a concrete box just below ground level. If the valve is difficult to turn, try applying a little lubricating oil around the handle and using a work glove. If this doesn’t help, call a plumber for advice.
If the old faucet is dripping, you may want to consider installing a new cartridge. This will stop the leaking and save you money on your utility bills. In addition, you can also choose a more efficient faucet to help reduce your energy costs.
Before starting, it’s a good idea to drain the water from the sink and to close any other drains in the room. This will prevent a mess in case the old faucet breaks or you are unable to finish the job. In addition, you can use this opportunity to clean the faucet hole and the sink.
To begin, you will need to remove the aerator from the tip of the faucet. Many newer faucets come with a tool to make this task easier. Then, if you have a three-hole faucet, you will need to install an escutcheon plate to cover the extra holes. Some of these plates are held in place with a screw, while others are caulked or sealed with plumber’s putty.
Once the faucet is disconnected, you will need to turn off the water again. It’s a good idea to have someone working alongside you with a shop vacuum to suck up any water that escapes as you disconnect the old faucet.
You’ll also need a socket wrench or a socket set and a wrench to loosen the nuts that hold the faucet in place. You should also have a rag with which to wipe off any gunk or mineral deposits that might be left behind. For hard-water stains, a bit of vinegar on a rag should take care of them.
Remove the old faucet
The first thing you need to do before replacing a faucet is shut off the water. This step is extremely important, as it will prevent water from spraying around the area while you’re trying to disassemble and change the faucet.
Once the water is off, it’s time to start removing the old faucet. You’ll want to remove the handle and any decorative trim pieces so that you can access the cartridge.
To remove the handle, use a screwdriver to unscrew the handle screw. Once the screw is removed, the handle should easily come off. If it isn’t coming off easily, try using some penetrating oil to break up any rust or sediment that may be blocking the screw.
Next, you’ll need to remove the escutcheon cap and the disk cylinder mounting screw. This can be done by using a flat head screwdriver or a pair of pliers. After removing the escutcheon and mounting screws, you can proceed to remove the old valve stem.
Once you’ve gotten rid of the old valve stem, you can remove the faucet seat and replace it. If you don’t replace the seat, it will likely leak later on. You can find replacement parts for your faucet at most hardware or home centers.
If you’re changing out an old faucet for a newer, more efficient model, you’ll also need to replace the seat washer. This part is responsible for preventing leaks from the actual handles. It’s usually made of rubber, so it’s fairly easy to remove and replace.
Once you’re finished with the seat washer, you can move on to removing and replacing the O-ring. This step is extremely important, as it’s the only thing preventing water from flowing through your faucet. You can find replacement O-rings for your faucet at most hardware and home centers.
Once you’ve replaced the O-ring, you can begin removing and replacing the old cartridge. The process for this will vary depending on the type of faucet you have. For example, if you have a cartridge faucet, you’ll need to lift the cartridge out of the assembly and inspect it for damage or wear. If you need to replace the cartridge, you can do this by removing the old one and then using needle-nose pliers to take out the new cartridge.
Remove the old cartridge
Cartridge faucets use a small cartridge at the top of the handle to control hot and cold water temperature. Over time, the cartridge can become worn or clogged with mineral build-up, which can cause your faucet to operate differently than it did before. When that happens, you will need to replace the cartridge. The good news is that replacing a cartridge in a Moen faucet is fairly simple and can be done by anyone with some basic plumbing skills.
First, you will need to remove the handle from your faucet. This may take a bit of wiggling or twisting, but should be relatively easy. You will usually find a screw that holds the handle underneath a removable plastic cover plate or cap. This cap may be located on the top of the handle or on the side of the faucet body. Once you have removed the handle, you can begin to work on removing the old cartridge.
The way the cartridge is held in place will vary between different models of Moen faucets. Some older, simpler faucets will simply use a large nut that is exposed once the handle has been removed. Other faucets, on the other hand, will have a decorative cap that needs to be removed before you can reach the cartridge retaining nut. Once you have the handle off, use a wrench or channel-type pliers to loosen and remove the retaining nut from the cartridge.
Once the retaining clip has been removed, you can simply pull up on the cartridge to remove it from the faucet body. If it is stuck due to mineral buildup or years of use, you may need to apply some gentle but firm pressure in order to get it to budge. Once the cartridge is removed, you can proceed to removing the old valve seat and spring.
The process for removing these parts is very similar to the one for removing the cartridge, and can be done using a wrench or channel-type pliers. Once the parts have been removed, you can insert your new cartridge into place and tighten the retaining nut. Install the new faucet
The process of replacing a faucet is pretty straightforward, and you shouldn’t have too much trouble. Just make sure that you’re familiar with how your new faucet connects to the water line, and that you’re following all of the manufacturer’s guidelines. Once you’re done with that, it should be a matter of just screwing it in and turning the water back on.
You’ll also need to disconnect any aged supply lines connected to the old faucet, and you might have to use a bit of force. It’s a good idea to place some rags or a receptacle in the sink cabinet to catch any water that might drip from the pipes you’re removing.
Once you’ve disconnected the water supplies, you can begin removing the old faucet. If there are any stubborn rust or mineral deposits, you might need to remove the entire faucet body. If you’re having trouble removing the faucet, you can try using some penetrant to loosen up any stuck parts. Be careful, though, and don’t get any of the lubricant on your skin or in your eyes.
Before you install the new faucet, make sure that you have a clean work area. You should also be able to locate the holes for the faucet on the sink. Some older sinks have extra holes for the faucet handles, but you can cover these with an escutcheon plate that’s included with your new faucet. Just be sure that the plate is watertight, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for doing so.
If your home has hard water, you might need to install a water softener before installing your new faucet. This will help to prevent mineral buildup and rust, which can cause your faucet to leak.
If your leaky faucet is driving you crazy, it’s probably time to replace it with a new one. Leaking faucets can lead to mold growth, and they can also damage other parts of your kitchen or bathroom. Replacing your old faucet with a new one will save you money and will provide you with many more years of service.
There are many factors to consider when selecting a new faucet. The number of handles, spray nozzle type and even the spacing of required holes are all important considerations.
